Jamaican Accused of Robbery Ordered to Report to Immigration Department, Receives Bail Conditions in District Court

A Jamaican who was here illegally was ordered to report to the Immigration Department as part of his bail after he appeared in the District “A” Traffic Court last Friday.

Novian Travis Vaughn Mullings, a 34-yearold labourer of Corner Beckwith Street and Ashby Alley, The City, pleaded not guilty to robbing Anderson Crichlow of a cell phone, a pair of shoes, a wallet and $65 on December 15.

Prosecutor Constable Ralph Rollock objected to Mullings’ release, saying the accused was “given an opportunity to be here in 2022”.

“But in 2024 he has not regularised his status, so he is here as an illegal immigrant,” the prosecutor said.

However, Mullings countered that he was no flight risk “’cause my passport was lost for eight months now”.

He said if he had arrived in the island the Thursday, he was “working from the Monday” in the construction industry.

The accused further told the court: “Construction kind of ease off, so I take another job.”

However, Mullings admitted he never had a work permit.

He said he knew nothing about the charge and was wrongfully accused.

“I have no way to prove my innocence. I was inside sleeping,” he said.

“I can’t prove it cause my alibi come and see me sleeping. And that man who say I rob him is a vagrant,” he added.

“My fate is in your hands right now,” Mullings told Magistrate Alison Burke.

Magistrate Burke granted the accused bail in the sum of $2 000 with one surety.

She ordered him to report to the Immigration Department every Wednesday by 1 p.m.

She further ordered him to report to Central Police Station every Monday, Wednesday and Friday before 10 a.m.

The accused will return to court on June 24. (HLE)
