Fraudulent Letter Circulating Impersonating Central Bank of Barbados Demands Payment of Up to $28,000: Bank Issues Warning and Urges Recipients to Report Scam

Barbadians are being cautioned against a fraudulent letter in circulation that falsely claims to be from the Central Bank of Barbados demanding payment of fees up to $28 000.

The central bank issued a statement on Tuesday alerting the public to the scam, which involves a document bearing a forged signature of Governor of the Central Bank Dr Kevin Greenidge. The bank emphasised that it has not authorised any such communication.

“If you or anyone you know has already made payments in response to this fraudulent communication, we strongly advise you to contact the Barbados Police Service and file a report,” the statement read.

The bank confirmed that it is collaborating with local authorities to investigate the matter, adding that “those responsible for this fraudulent activity will be subject to legal prosecution”.

The fraudulent letter reportedly requests a “final fee” of $28 000, which includes a $4 000 registration fee. The central bank is urging recipients to disregard the letter immediately and to refrain from making any payments or sharing personal information with unauthorised individuals or entities.
