Three St Michael Men Remanded on Separate Charges: Latest Updates from Chief Magistrate’s Court

Three St Michael men were remanded to Dodds prison over the weekend when they appeared on separate charges before Chief Magistrate Ian Weekes.

Shamar Armanny Mayers, a resident of Leigh Gap, Passage Road, went before the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court on Saturday accused of wounding Derrick Chase on April 24 with intent to maim, disfigure or disable him or to do some serious bodily harm to him.

Sergeant Randolph Boyce grounded his objections to bail on the fact that the virtual complaint was hospitalised and fears that the accused would interfere with him, the nature and seriousness of the offence, as well as the strength of the evidence.

In his application, Mayers sought to convince the court that, among other things, he did not intend to interfere with Chase.

His application fell short, and he was remanded until May 24, 2024.

When 19-year-old Ericko Maliquie Williams of Bibby’s Lane made his appearance before the chief magistrate on the charge that he robbed Amorelle Lashley of a bag, wallet, and $60 cash, totaling $410 on April 5, the prosecution argued that he should not get bail at the time.

Sergeant Boyce based his objections on the nature and seriousness of the charge, the strength of the evidence, the need to protect society from the accused, and the allegation that a weapon was used to commit the reported offence.

Williams countered the prosecutor’s arguments, saying that not only had he never missed a court date, but he also had an alibi for the date the offence is alleged to have occurred.

But his application was unsuccessful and he was remanded to prison until May 14. The matter was transferred to the District ‘D’ Magistrates’ Court — the jurisdiction where the crime is alleged to have taken place.

Also remanded to appear on that date before the District ‘D’ Magistrates’ Court was Leaon Seymour Freeman of 1st Avenue, Sealy Land, Bank Hall.

The 30-year-old is charged that on April 4, in the parish of St George, he entered Fair Deals Minimart as a trespasser and stole $6 564.94 which belonged to the business, and $105 belonging to Keron Newton, and at the time had with him a firearm.

He is further alleged to have, in the same parish on the same date, brandished a firearm while committing the offence of aggravated burglary.

Freeman could not plead to any of the two charges as they are indictable.
