Knockout queens UWI Blackbirds dug deep to keep on course for a double crown season after being pressured by Phoenix Security Services Carlton in the Goddard Enterprises Limited Division One League on Monday night at Oldbury, St Philip.
Carlton seemed on course to maintain the night’s upset theme when they held the Blackbirds two sets to one, thanks to the performances of Rhea Bryant and national player Tiara Johnson.
But too many unforced errors by Carlton and push back from Blackbirds’ Tenielle Chapman-Goodluck and Desanni Waithe stopped Carlton 25-19, 21-25, 19-25, 25-6, 15-6.
Blackbirds’ setter Carah Watson, who was battling the other Barbados playmaker Tiffany Webster on the opposite side of the net, smartly went to Chapman-Goodluck repeatedly to pull Blackbirds out of the hole. On the other hand, Webster was often thwarted by horrible passing and serving by her Carlton players. (KB)
