"Tarouba – Shai Hope hits a winning six as West Indies clinch a 3-2 series triumph over England in the final T20 International. Hope's unbeaten 43 seals victory with four balls to spare."
Tarouba – Shai Hope hit a winning six as West Indies bounced back from two consecutive losses to beat England by four wickets in the fifth and final T20 International at the Brian Lara Stadium last night to take a 3-2 series triumph.
The hosts went into the last over chasing nine runs to win but Jason Holder secured three off Chris Woakes’ first delivery and Hope then superbly smashed the next ball over cover for a maximum to seal victory at 133-6 with four balls to spare in the low-scoring encounter after England were dismissed for 132 in 19.3 overs.
Left-arm seamer Sam Curran had given England a chance in the previous over, giving away only two runs and taking a wicket.
“It was closer than we thought at the end today, yes. We kept losing key wickets but we always knew Shai Hope was going to be the important man on this pitch,” said West Indies captain Rovman Powell.
The victory with four balls to spare completed a hat-trick of T20 series wins for West Indies in 2023, after beating South Africa away and India at home.
Summarised scores:
England 132 off 19.3 overs (Phil Salt 38, Liam Livingstone 28, Moeen Ali 23; Gudakesh Motie 3-24, Akeal Hosein 2-20, Jason Holder 2-24). West Indies 133 for six off 19.2 overs (Shai Hope 43 not out, Sherfane Rutherford 30, Johnson Charles 27; Reece Topley 2-17, Adil Rashid 2-21). West Indies won by four wickets.
