Reports of vendors near Cheapside market facing relocation ahead of T20 World Cup stir controversy. Lack of communication from officials raises concerns among community. Spokesperson criticizes government's handling of the situation.
Vendors operating outside of the Cheapside market are up in arms today as reports of a move to relocate them ahead of the T20 World Cup circulated within that community.
Some told the Weekend Nation that officials informed them that as early as Saturday they would begin to receive letters indicating where they would be placed.
Spokesperson for the group, Euretha Belgrave, said most disturbing to them was the lack of communication, as well as the prospect of being removed from the high foot traffic area during Barbados’ hosting of the prestigious sporting event.
“What they are doing to us is not right. This is the Government that told us that they are about vendors. Nobody has come to us officially to speak to us, so we are just cats and dogs that you can kick about. You don’t even treat a dog like that, so how can you try to treat us like this?” she asked.
