Highway 2 Pre-Construction Work in St. Thomas to Cause Temporary Disruptions, Traffic Lane Reductions

Motorists using Highway 2 in St. Thomas should prepare for temporary disruptions as pre-construction work gets underway from Monday, February 17.
The Ministry of Transport and Works (MTW) has announced that test pits will be excavated along the route from Hopewell Plantation to Rugby Plantation over a 15-day period. This preparatory step forms part of the full reconstruction of Highway 2, which will span from Cane Garden to Bridgefield.
Infra Construction Inc., the contractor overseeing the project, will be digging small sections of the road to examine its subbase. According to the MTW, this process is necessary to assess soil conditions, identify weak spots, and determine the stability of the road’s foundation before major works begin.
As a result, traffic flow at test pit locations will be reduced to a single lane, with traffic wardens on-site to manage the situation.
The ministry has assured that all test pits will be refilled with compacted marl at the end of each workday to allow for normal traffic movement.
This initiative falls under the CAF Roads Programme, funded by the Development Bank for Latin America and the Caribbean.
Other ongoing projects under this programme include the rehabilitation of Prior Park Road in St. James, Highway D from Content to Shop Hill in St. Thomas, and the upgrade of Rock Dundo, St. James to Gibbs, St. Peter. (SP/PR/MTW)
