Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA Inc.) Endorses 2025 Budget's Focus on Aviation and Tourism Sectors

The Grantley Adams International Airport (GAIA Inc.) has expressed strong approval of the 2025 Budget, particularly the initiatives aimed at bolstering the island’s aviation and tourism sectors.

Monday’s Budget, presented by Minister in the Ministry of Finance Ryan Straughn, prioritises investments in aviation infrastructure and seeks to make regional air travel more affordable.

GAIA Inc. Chief Executive Officer Hadley Bourne voiced his support for the government’s focus on aviation, highlighting its critical role in the island’s economic development.

“This attention to the industry underscores the pivotal role that aviation plays in Barbados’ economic growth,” Bourne said in a statement.

“As we begin the airport’s expansion project, we are dedicated to ensuring that these enhancements improve efficiency, connectivity, and the overall experience for travelers.”

A key highlight of the budget is the reduction of the Air Travel and Tourism Development Fee for regional passengers. Effective July 1, 2025, the fee will decrease from US$35 to US$20. Bourne acknowledged the significance of this change, saying that while the reduction may appear to be modest, “it is a start which presents an opportunity for lower airfare pricing, a move which can stimulate increased travel within the

region.”

He also stressed the importance of intra-Caribbean travel. “Interregional travel is the backbone of connectivity in the Caribbean,” Bourne said, adding that, “A reduction in travel fees, coupled with continued discussions on tax harmonisation across CARICOM nations, will help lower ticket prices

and encourage more frequent travel. It is now essential for airlines and tourism stakeholders to capitalise on this

initiative by offering more competitive regional fares and packages.”

GAIA Inc., recognised for its leadership as the only English-speaking Caribbean airport on the ACI World Facilitation and Service Standing Committee, reiterated its commitment to advocating for policies that improve aviation standards, accessibility, and affordability.

The organisation said it was looking forward to working with government, airlines, and tourism partners to ensure the budget’s policy adjustments translate into real benefits for travellers and the wider Barbadian economy.
